Hutchins relocates cognition from the bounded individual to systems whose properties emerge across interacting scales. A person working with an artefact, a group coordinating through technologies, or a body–brain–world assembly can accomplish cognitive operations unavailable to any isolated component. The decisive methodological principle is therefore to refuse an a priori unit of analysis: the relevant boundary must be discovered empirically according to where memory, reasoning, transformation and error correction actually occur. His examples show high-level cognition emerging from culturally orchestrated low-level processes applied to charts, inscriptions, linguistic forms and technical devices. The iconic idea is propagation: representational states move through heterogeneous media, changing form while maintaining enough structure to support an operation. Hutchins bridges cognitive science with anthropology and infrastructure studies because knowledge is shown to depend on organised environments as much as neural activity. Cognition becomes a materially and socially distributed achievement whose persistence relies on relations among bodies, signs, instruments and conventions.
